Snake Boat, so called for its resemblence to the shape of a hooded snake, is the traditional war boat of Kerala. The local populace call it CHUNDAN VALLAM which means beaked boat. In the centre of the boat, which was earlier place of canon, two people stand and beat with poles on the platform and sing Vanchipattu. The person at the high point of the boat is the chief oarsman. There will be 64 to 128 oarsmen depending on the size of the boat. These boats are used these days for the famous boat races of Kerala.
